FAVOURITE AMERICAN DESTINATION: Monument Valley, Vancouver Island, Grand Targhee

HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS: Walking down to Ucluelet Harbour (Vancouver Island) when a fishing trawler had just arrived. Saw hundreds of Bald Eagle circling above, and sea lions around, the boat. Fisherman gave me a dead shark to feed to the sea lions. Next day, very early April, had whale-watching booked at Tofino. No orcas had been seen yet - it was still too early in the season. I was getting in the boat when a huge dorsal fin appeared out of nowhere, followed by numerous smaller ones. The first pod of the season had arrived! Followed it for hours up the sound.
